Choice and Advocacy

The NDIS places participants at the centre of decision-making to give people more choice and control. Find out how choice, control and advocacy affects you.

Choice and control is about people with disability, their families and carers having control over the course of their lives, including the flexibility to make decisions about the disability services and supports they use. Under the NDIS this means decisions around things like:

  • the type of supports and services they use
  • who provides them
  • how they are designed and provided
  • how resources are able to be used
  • how their funding is managed.

Having new choices and making new decisions can be challenging. Speak Out Advocacy has developed a video that talks about choice and decision making.

Sometimes we need help making decisions. Being heard and having the confidence to speak up is not always easy. Advocacy means ‘standing beside’ someone, or standing up for someone’s rights.

There are places in Tasmania where you can access to advocacy services. Advocacy Tasmania gives free, confidential advocacy services to people, including people with a disability.

Speak Out Advocacy is an advocacy service and a membership organisation for people with a disability.

See our resources and links page for more information about the NDIS and links to advocacy services.
