Oakdale Industries opened their doors to highlight the importance of supported employment for people with disability. The event was part of Our Work in Action week, a BuyAbility initiative designed to showcase what Disability Enterprises do, share the stories of supported employees and bust some myths about supported employment.

Oakdale Industries, our timber manufacturing enterprise, held a site tour to show guests the current operations and to catch a glimpse of our new state-of-the-art Training and Manufacturing Centre under construction on site.

CEO, Drew Beswick said, “As Tasmania’s largest employer of people with disability and a member of BuyAbility, we are committed to the future of supported employment.

“Across our three social enterprises in Southern Tasmania, we employ 116 people with disability to manufacture timber products, recycle paper, grow fruit trees, produce potting mix, and provide mail, packaging and sewing services.”

BuyAbility is an initiative of National Disability Services to promote and secure a thriving supported employment sector – one that produces high-quality products and services and meaningful employment and training opportunities for people with disability.

NDS Chief Executive Ken Baker said, “BuyAbility is about celebrating the value of supported employment. 177 not-for-profit Disability Enterprises employ almost 21,000 people with disability who otherwise would be excluded from work. Disability Enterprises create enormous social and economic benefits for their local communities and Australia. Each year Disability Enterprises save the Australian government close to $500 million.”

Disability Enterprises across Australia have been hosting events to celebrate Our Work in Action week.
